Armor on a rigged character

Hey there. I modeled a human base, rigged it and etc, but stumbled on a little problem: Armor.
The thing is that should the arm bone, for example, be rotated, the piece of armor goes straight into the "human" mesh. The screenshots show it.
So, has anyone ever dealt with armor before? If so, can you tell me how to armor a character, without the armor... you know... amputating a limb? I had ideas for Shape Keys, or separate bones for the armor, but I wanted to hear your opinions first.
   Thanks in advance.

I don't play with bone animation, well i have played in 3dmax... it wasn't fun at all....

But i'm thinking your armor needs a collision object so it collides with the body.

I cant see any other easy way to prevent this... unless in script you control rotations to prevent the armor from entering the body... that should be fun to figure out :P

I can only say that collision in animation is almost never the way to go. The only thing I can give you is this playlist of Sebastian Lague of him modelling an rpg character with armor.

Maybe a lock rotation or a constraint of some sort. The piece of armor should be parented to the arm bone, I think and then you should modify it's properties. I haven't played with it but when I do I'll make sure to let you know.

Huge thanks to both of you. Gonna check that playlist and consider playing around with Thunder's suggestion.
