NK2 - Kart Racing to the MAX

It's been a long time since I've made anything in 3DRAD at all, hasn't it? Well, for what is probably going to be my last game I make in this aging tool, I've decided to see how I'd go at remastering the original Ninkeo Kart game and put a heap of new elements not seen previously.

===============
Ninkeo Kart 0.2 is now out!
Finally, after a bit of a delay, I've finished the second release of the game. You can download it from http://drninkeo.me/files/NK_0.2.rar (note that you will need to have WinRAR or 7zip to extract this)

What's new in this build:
- NEW launcher, much easier to use and works better
          - There are now 3 different graphics settings, Low (disables shadows and bloom), Medium (shadows enabled) and High (bloom enabled).
          - Launcher is currently incomplete, and things might not work properly.
- Added 4 more tracks, Hardwick Raceway (new), Nink's Raceway (classic), Hilltop Run (new) and Mount Burra (new)
- All tracks now have a loading screen specific to them.
- Added skid marks and smoke.
- Fixed the skidding sound from occuring while the kart was off road
- Tweaked the drifting functionality
- Tweaked the engine gear ratios and speed
- Made the AI slightly more forgiving

- Fixed the lightmap bug on the Windy Hill track
- Added a countdown to start the race
- Fixed the timer not restarting after restarting the race

In the next build, I aim to add at least 1 new kart, which is most likely going to be a modified buggy (hint: it's based off the one included with 3DRad, but with the roof cut off, lowered and made to look way cooler than normal) and fixing more bugs that you guys hopefully find.

===============

In my option, the original felt a bit too rushed, and wasn't well optimized when it came to running on a wide range of machines. With my improved scripting skills (programming helps A LOT, especially Game Maker and C# / VB.NET), I was able to get a prototype up and running quickly and efficiently, without causing a drain on 3DRAD too much.

This is what I felt the remaster would need in it:

- Some sort of drift functionality.
- Expanded player customization (name, kart colour).
- A hot-lap function, where the best lap is recorded and compared to.
- 4 four track GP cups for a total of 16 tracks.
- Better variety and original kart designs.

I also wanted to try and squeeze the best graphics I possible could out of 3DRAD before it begins to choke badly. So to accomplish this, I'm using the tried and true method of using giles to generate a lightmap for the terrain, along with populating it with 2D trees. Shadmar's user shaders take care of the kart colour as well as the tree shading.

With this new release, I've also gone and made the menu outside of the game. This is mainly because 3DRad's menu abilities really blows compared to what I could whip up in visual studio.

I can probably add compatability for 3D Rad games directly (like switching the start project based on a button clicked), using the method you said on Discord @drninkeo.

Good game bro, though I was a bit confused as to what I was supposed to click on at first. There are a lot of tabs and options. When I clicked the "Go race" button it launches but crashes so I launched the game without using the launcher. Not sure what that is.

Overall, very good to see someone using 3D Rad to make a fun, interesting game

P.S. My challenge to you: Add multiplayer

The launcher worked for me, but i found the cart steering to be sluggish and caused me to go off track alot.

I see alot of object flickering, i think you have rigidbodies showing throungh where skinmeshs are or maybe multiple rigidbodies visability fighting with each other.

Also you need a official startdown counter before the race starts.. when launched now we are instantly in the race with no warning.

No worries mate, glad to see you liked it, even if the launcher's borked. When it crashes, does it throw up an 'Unhandled Exception' dialog with the big red cross in it? If it does, could you send me the code in it?

Multiplayer is coming, that's why there's a button on the mode selection tab

I think the flickering might be because of the lightmap script not running for some reason. It wasn't there when I gave it a test run? The steering can be fixed quite easily, since I've configured it to use a script for variable, speed-based steering. Lastly, there's a countdown script in there, but I've had problems with it not working correctly, so it's disabled for now. I'll try to get it working before the next test release.

@tinsoldier is this one of the places that was flickering when you tried it? If so, I've tracked it down to a lightmap error that giles exported.

So it looks like more LOD options and graphics settings are needed? I want to optimize it the best I can before 3DRad starts getting in the way. (btw, the menu is actually in the launcher application)

@drninkeo I find that disabling shadows is good for performance. Might be good option to try.

Now a question for you guys... is there any way of reducing the distance drawn by the camchase, and change a skinmesh's LOD using a script? I might see if cutting down the view distance and increasing the LOD value of certain skinmesh objects would help.
