Rad Racers - Stress Test

Hi all,

As I tend to do every so often, I'm back messing about with a SuperSprint styled game.

This one will have a (I feel) improved camera on previous tries, but to get the game looking how I want it, I need to get a few users to stress test the number of imposters I'm running on their systems.

Please download the linked zip (just 7mb compressed, 21 uncompressed) ,run the compiled test, and feedback your fps (top left number) in this thread.

If you could give the resolution you run it at too please that would be helpful.

Thanks.

@grimbarian

I think your sharing the wrong link to your project, i have dropbox and when logged in i cant download your file using dropbox... when using your link it requires me to log into my dropbox account... this tells me only people with drop accounts can download your project.. I think its just the link your sharing is wrong IMO, my dropbox links don't look like yours FYI.

Ok that link worked.

For the project, 1680x1050, 8G of ram with a i5 3.10G
Nvidia Gforce GT 610 with 2G of ram. ( the last card listed on nvidia's website that they list the specs for without going into legacy support :P )

I was getting 14 FPS at the worst, 62FPS at the best

It seemed to be better at the beginning and as the race went on the FPS got a lot worse.. maybe if imposters are being used here, you mite need to hide them when not in view .. that gets tricky with 2 or more vehicles that may be on different parts of the track..

PS i like the look of the track and it's very basic design.

Hated the camera view and the sloppy controls.. but over all.. i like it.

G'day grim.. good to see you making stuff in RAD again

Just tried this on my tablet and its essentially unplayable, 15fps at the best and 5-6 most of the time. Running at 1024x768 with an Intel Atom + Intel HD Graphics and 4gb ram (I know, it's not the best but it'll run ninkeo kart 2 at full speed without shadows)

EDIT 1: Deleting the shadows makes it go all the way up to 60, even at the tablet's native resolution of 1920x1280

EDIT 2: Runs at 60 solid on my main rig, 1080p, AMD Ryzen 1700x and a Geforce GTX 970

I reckon my main desktop will run it at full speed in 1080p, so I'll try that out later on.

That being said, I like the track design, although the volumetric shadows don't look as good as a lightmap

Deleting shadows.. good idea, tried that, got a solid 60FPS through the whole track, by the third time around the track i caught up to the red AI car and passed it
, with the better FPS the controls improved for me, with more play time i'll get even more used to the track layout and expect to pass the  AI and win every time..

The AI's one flaw is it only guide's the car according to the path and doesn't learn or adjust to the corners so it spins out every time , multiple times in the corners, which allows me to catch up and pass.

Thanks TinSoldier, your spec is closest to the minimum I'd like to aim at (although I'm thinking of 'fixing' the resolution...).

Interesting that it got worse... everything is pretty much created on startup, so after that there shouldn't be any further strain.

Thanks DrNinkeo, I was making a few 2D games but wanted to do some quick and simple modelling and always fall back to Rad for testing the models!

I will add in an option to allow the user to disable the shadows I think, although I did notice the main track shadow wasn't fully closed hull (fixed now) so that may have been adding to the problems.

Visually I'm going for a "Mirrors Edge" kinda look, so I'm really glad you and Tin like the design/feel of it.

Yep - I've gone through and altered the path settings to whole numbers (OCD!!!!) and adjusted the AI so they don't spin any more, cheers.

Glad you at least liked it enough to go for a few laps though!! :-)

Won't post another update for a while, will get the visuals closer to how I want them and add in a lot more of the 'racing' elements before the next download to test. Thanks.

Damn, you really didn't get to play it at all did you???

Option to disable shadows has now been added to the current working build, so hopefully you'll give it another go once I compile the next version.

Thanks for testing.

New link with some fixed shadows for stress testing please. This runs MUCH smoother on my machine now, so just want to see with others please.

You can turn off some (not all) of the shadows by pressing 2 if you need to and back on with 1.
